What I love most about public art is its accessibility—it’s for everyone. No matter who you are or where you come from, public art invites you to pause, reflect, and engage with your surroundings.

original artwork for the Culinary Institute of the South. This piece celebrates the rich foodways of the Gullah Geechee culture, highlighting the history, traditions, and flavors that have shaped Southern cuisine.
Through dynamic illustrations and his signature indigo drips, Amiri brings to life iconic elements of Southern food, from seafood like shrimp and oysters to fresh produce and staple dishes deeply rooted in Gullah Geechee traditions. The artwork serves as both an homage to the culinary ingenuity of the Sea Islands and a vibrant educational tool for students and visitors, showcasing the cultural legacy that continues to influence Southern cuisine today. With this installation, Amiri invites viewers to explore the intersection of art, food, and heritage in an engaging and visually captivating way.
Large-Scale Mural at Penn Center National Historic District
During my Culture and Community Residency at the historic Penn Center on Saint Helena Island, I had the privilege of creating a large-scale mural that celebrates the rich heritage and enduring legacy of this sacred space. This project was part of a meaningful collaboration between the University of Georgia and Penn Center, uniting history, art, and community.
The mural reflects the deep cultural roots of the Gullah Geechee people, honoring their resilience, traditions, and contributions to American history. It was an incredible experience to bring this vision to life in such a historic and inspiring environment, weaving together stories of the past and hope for the future.
New Mural Honoring Hilton Head Island History
On May 22, 2024, the Town of Hilton Head Island unveiled a new mural created by Amiri, paying tribute to the island’s rich history. The mural honors the Hilton Head Island Fishing Cooperative, which was founded in 1966, celebrating the legacy and contributions of the local fishing community. This artwork serves as a visual reminder of the island’s cultural heritage and deep connection to the sea Island and Gullah culture

Community Mural Across the Gullah Geechee Corridor
This mural was a collaborative effort created with children from across the National Gullah Geechee Corridor. Traveling to various art centers, each young artist painted a unique piece of the mural, bringing their creativity and perspective to life. Sponsored by the Art Center of Coastal Carolina and South Arts, this project was a beautiful fusion of community, culture, and artistic expression.
Working with these talented kids to create a large-scale mural was an incredible experience. Seeing it displayed throughout the Gullah Geechee Corridor, connecting communities and showcasing the vibrant stories of this heritage, was deeply rewarding.
